Step right up and give the Accordion a whirl if you think you’ve got the solitaire skills of a card wizard and the luck of a four-leaf clover! This game is so tough it makes a Rubik's Cube look like tic-tac-toe! Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and you probably won’t, because why would you?), is to squish 52 standard playing cards into one sad little pile.
When the game kicks off, two brave face-up cards will be flung onto the battlefield of your screen, while the rest of the cards sulk in a face-down stockpile at the bottom right, probably plotting their escape. Click that stockpile and watch as a card flops out like it’s auditioning for a role in a magic show, landing right next to the current face-up cards.
But hold onto your hats! As soon as one row runs out of room (it’s getting crowded in there!), the next card will plop down in the row below, like the world’s laziest game of musical chairs. If you discover two cards that are either of the same suit or rank, feel free to play matchmaker and move one pile to a neighboring pile on the left! Just make sure you don’t get too cozy with the cards; they get cranky if you try to squeeze them together when they’re not ready.
For example, if you have a bunch of cards that look like a sad poker hand—8 of spades, 6 of spades, 10 of diamonds, 8 of hearts, and Q of clubs—don’t be shy! You can shuffle that 6 of spades or 8 of hearts right up to the top of the 8 of spades like they’re the stars of a card reunion show.
Once you start making moves, the remaining cards will shimmy over to fill any gaps, as if they’re trying to sneak in on the action. Keep squishing and squashing those cards until you’ve managed to compress them all into a single pile, and who knows? You might just beat the odds and claim your title as the Accordion champ! Or, you know, you could just end up with a very colorful mess. Good luck!
